On 21 November, the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the Lahore High Court’s ruling on Mohammad Naveed, a convict in the 2003 case of Jhanda Chichi’s assassination attempt along with former President Pervez Musharraf. The SC refused the Punjab government’s appeal and provided the convict with a pre-conviction period in detention and general remissions. Naveed was arrested on 31 December 2003, where the SC reversed Naveed’s death sentence ruling to that of life imprisonment in 2005 and allowed him and another accused assailant, Adnan Khan a pre-conviction period and remissions by a different bench of the HC in 2015.
A senior counsel who pleaded Naveed’s case before the SC said that the “natural corollary” of the order would entail that Naveed would be “released immediately” after serving 20 years of his 14-year jail term. A three-judge bench refuted the Punjab government’s appeal and accepted the decision of the LHC’s Rawalpindi bench that gave the provisions to Naveed under the Army Act of 1952. In the Rawalpindi bench, the petitioner had appealed for a pre-conviction period of one year, seven months and 23 days.
